Chinese Philosophy of Training

The Chinese Model of Sport Training is an efficient system of Athletic Development.  It integrates research and practical application, with an emphasis on an early start, to develop specific qualities that are essential for elite levels of sports performance.  Through the identification of fundamental athletic qualities that contribute to overall sport performance, coaches are able to design formalized training and recovery programs that target the athlete’s sport specific needs.

Today China dominates the sport of weightlifting.  Out of the 9 qualifying competitors for the games in Beijing they claimed 8 gold medals and 1 silver in 15 competitive weight classes.  They succeed because of their sports school model.  These schools have very established methods for selecting future successful athletes at an early age.  Athletes are selected based on elite performance or physical predisposition for success in a given sport.  Those that are chosen would then attend a school that would train them vigorously and systematically for future success in their chosen sport.  The Chinese  understand and implement training methods that are not used or even understood in the U.S.  They possess a great knowledge of exercise physiology and have collected and applied years of carefully controlled research that was designed to manipulate the body’s systems to maximize sport performance.

Our Coach and Mentor

Jianping Ma, our mentor, is a product of the Chinese system.  He was selected at the age of 10, and trained until the age of 23, when the he made 1984 Olympic team.  During his time in the Chinese Weightlifting system he gained firsthand knowledge of the techniques and practices that make this system the most efficient at developing athletes.  He then coached in China and Africa, and currently coaches in the US. He has adapted his training for all sports, and two of his former athletes have held world records in the Olympic lifts.
